Clinical Laboratory Advisory Committee

A Clinical Laboratory Advisory Committee is responsible for providing oversight to insure optimal performance of clinical laboratory operations and optimal utilization of clinical laboratory resources by physicians and other health care providers.

The Committee uses evidence and data to identify opportunities for improvement, monitor laboratory test utilization, assess new diagnostic assays/technologies, recommend best practices, improve charting of laboratory results, increase awareness of compliance, and monitor in-house and reference laboratory performance.

Effective Committees are usually co-chaired by a clinical pathologist and another medical specialist. Committee members should be selected by the co-chairs and include representatives from clinical pathology, clinical specialists, chief resident of internal medicine and a nurse. Additional expertise can be sought on an as needed basis.

The overall goal is to provide high-value laboratory services that result in efficient, effective and safe patient care, with a high level of customer satisfaction by patients, physicians, and nurses.
