DNA Antibody (Anti-ds DNA)

The best test for confirming a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythermatosus (SLE) is an immunoassay for serum antibody directed against double stranded DNA. High titer anti-DNA antibodies are present in 60-70% of patients with SLE. They occur with much lower frequency and at much lower titers in other autoimmune diseases and in healthy persons.Serial anti-DNA levels are useful in monitoring response to therapy, since anti-DNA levels decrease following successful therapy. (See antinuclear antibody for a more detailed discussion)

Reference range is 0 - 4 IU/ml.

Specimen requirement is one SST tube of blood.
